Senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman P J Kurien is in the eye of a storm in connection with the Suryanelli rape case. Though his name did not surface in the main case, the girl had later filed a complaint against Kurien. The issue acquired urgency after the Supreme Court a few weeks ago asked the Kerala High Court to reopen the main case.
The allegations against Kurien also resurfaced.
Besides, in the wake of the recent Delhi gang-rape case, the government passed an ordinance making punishment for sexual violence against women quite severe.
In this context, as the Opposition slowly raised its pitch for his removal, Kurien gave details of why he was exonerated by the court.
