CVC seeks report on chopper deal

The Central Vigilance Commissionhas sought a report from the Defence Ministry on allegedirregularities in the controversial Rs 3,600 crore VVIPchopper deal with an Italian firm.

The Chief Vigilance Officer of the Defence Ministry hasbeen asked to furnish the report on the charges of allegedcorruption raised in a complaint sent to the CVC, sources inthe anti-corruption watchdog said.

They said the complaint alleging corruption in thechopper deal was received by the Commission and it was sent tothe CVO, who acts as a distant arm of the CVC, of the DefenceMinistry as per standard practice.

The Commission is yet to receive a probe report in thematter, the sources said.

A CVO gets a maximum of four months to finalise itsreport or take necessary action on references of corruptioncomplaints forwarded to it by the probity watchdog.

The source declined to share further details includingname of complainant and other information citing "ongoingcontroversy over the deal". The complaint was received sometime back.

The CVC is also mulling a direct inquiry in the matter.

The Commission has conducted detailed enquiry in theallocation of second generation (2G) spectrum and found outvarious irregularities.

Central Vigilance Commissioner Pradeep Kumar, who wasDefence Secretary at the time the controversial deal wassigned, is understood to have told his officers to regularlypursue the status of the complaint of corruption in chopperdeal sent to the Defence Ministry for probe.
