Coast Guard commissions high-speed interceptor boat

An interceptor boat capable of search and rescue apart from maritime surveillance and which carries medium-range armaments was commissioned by the Coast Guard Friday.

The 28 metre-long interceptor boat with 75 tonnes displacement can achieve a maximum speed of 35 knots, Navy sources said.

It is designed for high-speed interception, close-coast patrol, low-intensity maritime operations besides surveillance.

The boat, named C-154, was commissioned by Maharashtra Chief Secretary Jayantkumar Banthia, at a ceremony attended by representatives of the Navy, Army, Air Force and state government officials.

It has been built by Bharati Shipyard Ltd and incorporates state-of-the-art navigation and communication equipment, besides medium-range armaments.

The vessel is also capable of operating in shallow water as well as deep seas, Navy sources said.
