Army Colonel held for allegedly carrying illegal drugs in Manipur

An Army Colonel and five otherswere detained today by the police in Manipur's Chandeldistrict after they were allegedly caught carrying illegaldrugs meant to be smuggled out to Myanmar.

Police sources said that the tablets worth Rs 1.50crore were found inside three vehicles at Pallel. The detainedincluded an Army PRO and his assistant, they said.

They were being interrogated at the Pallel policestation, about 45 kms south-east of here, the sources said.

The Army said the matter was being investigated andpromised strictest action if any personnel was found guilty.

"It is a matter of investigation. If found guilty,strictest action will be taken as per the law of the land,"Army Spokesperson Colonel Jagdeep Dahiya said in Delhi.

The six persons have not yet been arrested pending aninquiry to verify whether the drugs belonged to them, thesources said.

The drugs included tablets of Respifed, Omkop, Hilcold,Polyfed and Actidin, the sources said.
