Congress snubs Tharoor over gang-rape victim

The Congress Wednesday snubbed Minister of State for Human Resource Development Shashi Tharoor for suggesting that the identity of the Delhi gang-rape victim be made public.

"It is his personal opinion. Since he is a part of the government, he should have given the suggestion to the government rather than making (a public) statement. The party forum is also open for giving suggestions," Congress spokesperson Rashid Alvi told reporters.

Tharoor had suggested that the new anti-rape law be named after the victim as a mark of honour to her.

"There is no such practice in our country where laws of Indian Penal Code are named after individuals unlike in the US where they are named after the senators who move the bills," Alvi said.

The party's reaction came on a day when the victim's brother said he had no objection if her name was disclosed.
