Rail bribery: CBI lens on phone calls

The CBI is currently scouring nearly 1000 calls, which it had intercepted over a two-month period, that led to the arrest of ousted former Union Railway Minister Pawan Bansal’s nephew Vijay Singla and suspended Railway Board Member Mahesh Kumar.

It was on the basis of the wiretaps that the CBI arrested Kumar, Singla and middleman Sandeep Goyal on May 3. Singla and Goyal were arrested while accepting `90 lakh as part payment of the bribe to get Kumar appointed as Railway Board Member (Electrical).  Subsequently, the agency also arrested Manjunath, a Bangalore-based railway electrical equipment supplier, in connection with the case.

Recently, the CBI sent the transcripts of some of the taped calls to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) here.

Until now, nine people have been  arrested by the CBI in connection with the case.
