Court Orders FIR against Aamir, Others

BHOPAL: A local court in Jabalpur has directed police to register an FIR against Bollywood actor Aamir Khan and others in connection with publishing a semi-nude poster for the promotion of the upcoming movie ‘PK’.

Judicial Magistrate First Class R K Daheriya, while hearing a petition filed by advocate Amit Sahu, ordered the Adhartaal Police Station to book Aamir, film director Rajkumar Hirani, producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Film and Television Producers Guild of India president Mukesh Bhatt and publishers and editors of three Hindi newspapers.

Sahu prayed that the police should be directed to lodge an FIR under Section 292 (sale of obscene book, etc) and Section 294 (sale of obscene object to young person) of the IPC.

“The court has directed the police to file a report clarifying whether the poster in question comes under the category of obscenity and fixed the matter for hearing on September 19,” he said.

The judge, he said, relied on a 2007 Supreme Court judgment in the case of Sakiri Vasu vs State of Uttar Pradesh and others, and issued the directives to the police to register an FIR against Khan and others. The apex court in that case had held that a magistrate has the right to order police investigation on an application filed by the petitioner.

Sahu told Express that the actor’s semi-nude poster, which was published in newspapers and  shared online, was vulgar and obscene in nature and attracts provisions of the IPC for action against those responsible as it could corrupt the minds of people.
