Residents Feared Trapped in Building After Staircase Collapse

KOLKATA: A number of residents were feared trapped inside a four-storeyed building at Bowbazar under Muchipara police station area in the central part of the metropolis today after the staircase in the building collapsed, police sources said.    

However, there was no news of any casualty or injury in the incident, a senior police officer said.       

Fire Brigade officers said three fire tenders have already rushed to the area near Prem Chand Baral street along with a team of the Disaster Management Department of the state government and Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) to rescue the persons trapped inside the building.

"Even as some people have been rescued with the help of a ladder by the Fire Brigade and Disaster Management Personnel, but several others are feared trapped," Fire Brigade officers said.       

The area has been cordoned off to conduct the rescue operation safely, the police officers said.
