The top brass of the Election Commission will take a call on the appointment of the Army Chief next week.

Sources said on Saturday  that the EC had received the reference from the MoD and is examining the issue. “The meeting of the Commission could take place on Monday or Tuesday, where the matter would be considered,” sources said.

Just a fortnight ahead of poll results, the MoD has sought the opinion of the EC on the appointment of the successor to Army Chief Gen Bikram Singh, who is scheduled to retire three months from now.  This was confirmed by the Defence Minister A K Antony on Friday, who said that due process for appointment to the top Army post would be followed.

The poll panel will consider the matter in the light of its March 27 order that appointments, promotions, tenders and procurements of defence forces are not covered under the poll code in the ongoing as well as any other election in the future.
