State BJP Writes to Governor on Civic Polls

KOLKATA: The state BJP unit today wrote to West Bengal Governor M K Narayanan to ask the state government to hold polls in 17 municipalities whose term would be completed in June 2014.

In the letter, BJP state office bearers said that the State Election Commission (SEC) had formally requested the state government to hold the polls preferably on June 25.

However, the state government had not given any response so far, BJP members said.

In addition to that, the party said that at least 500 seats had fallen vacant in different panchayats along with the panchayats under North Bengal and Siliguri.

The letter urged the Governor to ask the state government to immediately notify the poll dates for all the above areas.

BJP said that the party had fared pretty well in a number of seats in the just concluded Lok Sabha polls, adding that it had become a cause of worry for the ruling party in the state.
