NEW DELHI: Foreign Secretary Sujatha Singh, who was in Herat in Afghanistan, inspected the damage to Indian Consulate in the terrorist attack and reviewed the security situation there.

The Indian consulate was attacked on May 23 by five terrorists, who were gunned down by the  Afghan national security forces and Indo-Tibetan Border Police personnel.

Sujatha, accompanied by senior MEA officials, went straight to Herat on a special plane and met Indian Ambassador to Afghanistan Amar Sinha and other senior officials. She also met Heart Governor Sayed Fazlullah Wahidi.

Indian consulate in Herat was readying to take up developmental projects, including Salma Hydel Dam.

The consulate building suffered major damage after the terrorists used Rocket-propelled grenades. The plan was apparently to take consular staff captive and continue the siege on the mission till Narendra Modi’s swearing-in on May 26, which would have made it impossible for Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai to attend the ceremony.
