NEW DELHI: Delhi Congress Monday accused the Home Ministry of "total failure" in maintaining law and order situation in Delhi, saying that killing of the constable reflected the poor security situation in the national capital.
Referring to the death of 42-year-old constable Jagbir Singh in a shootout in the wee hours here, Delhi Congress chief Arvinder Singh Lovely said, law and order situation has "deteriorated" to a great extent in the national capital, after the BJP-led government came to power at the Centre.
The DPCC president also slammed the Home Ministry for not announcing any compensation to the victim's family so far and demanded Rs 5 crore as a compensation to the constable's next of kin. He said the morale of the police force has gone down
drastically as the Centre has not "treated them well."
"It is very unfortunate that the government has not announced any financial assistance and help to the family of the deceased constable. We demand immediate compensation of Rs 5 crore to the next of the kin of the deceased. We will take up the issue very strongly," Lovely said.
Delhi Congress chief spokesperson Mukesh Sharma said there was no security for the common man in the city and claimed that the crime rate here has gone up significantly due to the "indifferent attitude" of the Centre towards security of the common man.
Delhi Police functions under the direct control of the Home Ministry.
Paying respect to the slain policeman, he said that the Congress will launch an agitation if adequate compensation was not given.
"It is very serious issue and the Home Ministry must provide all the help to the constable's family, who died in the line of duty," Sharma said.
He claimed that the morale of the police had always been "high" during the Congress rule, but was "going down" since BJP came to power.
Jagbir was killed while another constable was injured today when unidentified men allegedly opened fire on them in Outer Delhi's Vijay Vihar area at around 1:30 AM.
In the incident, which took place just hundred meters away from the Vijay Vihar Police Station, Jagbir died on the spot, while his colleague Narendra (42) was injured.
Jagbir had served in the Indian Army for 15 years and had joined Delhi Police in 2008.
This is the fourth such incident this year where a Delhi Police personnel has laid down his life in the line of duty.
On Saturday, three miscreants had opened fire on two policemen in Connaught Place area.
