Nod to Rename 12 Karnataka Cities

NEW DELHI: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Friday approved the eight-years-long pending proposal of the Karnataka Government to rename about a dozen cities, in consonance with their pronunciation in Kannada.

The approval came after taking views of the Survey of India, Ministry of Railways, Department of Posts and Ministry of Science, while the Intelligence Bureau had also given its clearance to the state’s proposal.

The final approval came from Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju and Home Minister Rajnath Singh.

Now, officially, Bangalore will be renamed as Bengaluru; Mangalore as Mangaluru; Bellary as Ballary; Bijapur as Vijapura; Belgaum as Belagavi; Chikmagalur as Chikkamagaluru; Gulbarga as Kalaburagi; Mysore as Mysure; Hospet as Hospete; Shimoga as Shivamogga; Hubli as Hubballi and Tumkur as Tumakuru.
