Nine Killed, 26 Injured in Bus Accident

GUWAHATI: At least nine persons were killed and 26 others injured, when a bus they were travelling in rolled down into a roadside ditch, after hitting the railing of a bridge in Assam in the wee hours of Sunday. The mishap occurred around 1:30 am at Natoli area in the state’s Nagaon district.

Official sources said the Assam State Transport Corporation bus was en route to Guwahati from Lakhimpur.  “The bus had hit the railing of a bridge and fell into the ditch. The driver and five women were among those killed,” Nagaon SP Arabinda Kalita said.

Thirty five people, including the driver and the conductor, were on board the vehicle, when it met with the accident,” the police said, adding, “Eight people were killed on the spot, while another, a woman, succumbed to her injuries in the hospital.”
