Separatist Booked for Celebrating Pakistan's Independence Day in Srinagar

SRINAGAR: Woman separatist leader and chairperson of Dukhtar-e-Millat (Daughters of Nation) Asiya Andrabi was on Monday booked by the police for celebrating Pakistan’s independence day in the Valley by hoisting the nation’s flag.

A police official said that an FIR has been registered under Section 13 of Unlawful Activities Prevention Act against Andrabi for hoisting Pakistani flags and singing its national anthem.

Andrabi had released a video on August 14 in which she and about 24 burqa-clad women were seen hoisting the Pakistani flag and singing its national anthem in a closed room here on the occasion of Pakistan’s independence day.

The separatist leader had also triggered another controversy by addressing a rally organised by LeT chief Hafiz Saeed in Pakistan via phone on August 14 and greeting people of the neighbouring country on their independence day.

This, however, is not the first time that Andrabi has been at the centre of a row. She was booked in March after she celebrated Pakistan’s National Day on March 23.

Andrabi, whose husband Qasim Faktoo is serving a life term, had appealed to the people to observe August 15 as ‘black day’ saying “it doesn’t suit India to celebrate its Independence while it continues to occupy J&K ‘illegally and illogically”.
