Sushma Swaraj Meets Maldivian Counterpart

NEW DELHI: In an effort to boost bilateral ties with Male, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Sunday met her Maldivian counterpart Dunya Maumoon.

During the meeting, both leaders reviewed the developmental projects in the island nation and also the possible agenda for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s likely visit in March.

Maumoon, who is on a private visit to New Delhi, met Sushma and discussed the ways to boost inter-country ties and maritime co-operation.

In his tweet, Syed Akbaruddin, the spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs has said, “Ocean diplomacy. Maritime neighbours India-Maldives to strengthen ties as they commemorate 50 years of relations.”

Modi’s visit to Maldives is expected to be followed by a trip to Sri Lanka. However, there has, so far, been no official announcement of the visit by the government.

Sushma and Maumoon, during their 45 minute-long meeting, are understood to have discussed the possible agenda during a summit between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen.

Meanwhile, Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena on Sunday arrived in India on his first foreign trip after assuming charge.
