SHILLONG: The body of a man arrested on the charge of burglary was found hanging inside the lock up of Jowai police station in Meghalaya's West Jaintia Hills district, police said today.
Cleophas Nongkhlaw (32) committed suicide using his vest inside lock-up of Jowai police station last evening, Superintendent of Police R Muthu said. Hailing from Iawmusiang locality in the district headquarters, Nongkhlaw was arrested on July 30 on charges of burglary and was under police remand.
Muthu said when the accused was found hanging, his wife was present at the police station. A magisterial inquiry have been ordered to probe the incident. Nongkhlaw, a drug user, had been arrested on several occasions in the past, police said.
