IIEST Suspends Student for Ragging, Act Strong Against 9 Others

A second year student of the IIEST, Shibpur was suspended after he was found guilty of ragging a first year student.

HOWRAH: A second year student of the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST), Shibpur was suspended today from the institute after he was found guilty of ragging a first year student.

Four other students of second year were asked by the IIEST authorities to leave the campus and were suspended from academic activities till further notice.

Five more students of the second year have been expelled from the hostel facility of the institute after charges of ragging against them were established by the institute's anti-ragging committee, which met today.

According to IIEST Dean of students' affairs Nitai Chandra Dey, all ten second year students were found guilty of ragging a first year student on August 2 and 4 last and the student had approached the authorities with his complaint.

"The anti-ragging committee of the institute has taken a stern decision so that students get the message very clear that ragging will not be tolerated in the campus at any cost," said Prof Dey.

The victim was also cautioned by the committee members for not adhering to the institute's rules and regulations and for furnishing sketchy details about his torment.
