RANCHI: Jharkhand Assembly today paid rich tributes to late former president A P J Abdul Kalam, President Pranab Mukherjee's wife Suvra Mukherjee, former Odisha Chief Minister J B Patnaik and other leaders who had recently passed away.

Expressing his condolence over Kalam's death, who passed away on July 27, Speaker Dinesh Oraon said his life was full of inspiration for everyone.

Recalling Suvra Mukherjee's devotion toward art, literature and music, Oraon said her death had deeply hurt the people.

Expressing deep sorrow over the death of three-time Chief Minister of Odisha J B Patnaik, the Speaker described him as intellectual of repute.

He also condoled the death of three-time Congress MP Sriballav Panigrahi, who was a minister in the Nandini Satpathy and Binayak Acharya governments in the neighbouring state in the 1970s.

Besides the Speaker, Chief Minister Raghubar Das, leader of opposition Hemant Soren and several other legislators paid tributes to these leaders and also to former Bihar Governor R S Gawai, Jharkhand MLA Baldev Hazra, Jhabua MP Dilip Singh Bhuria, Sister Nirmala and some other leaders, who passed away recently.

The House also expressed condolences of the death of the ten devotees who died in a stampede in Deogarh on August 10.

The CPI (ML-Liberation) MLA, Raj Kumar Yadav, expressed condolences of death of the five women, who were allegedly lynched by villagers after being accused of practising witchcraft earlier this month.

Later, the House was adjourned till Monday.
