SURAT: Fresh violence broke out in Surat on Wednesday afternoon amid the ongoing protest by the members of Patel community.

Following arson and stone-pelting incidents by the members of Patel community after the detention of their 22-year-old leader Hardik Patel on Tuesday night, a curfew was imposed in three towns of North Gujarat and some areas of Surat.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today appealed to the people of Gujarat to remain calm and maintain peace following violence in the state over an agitation demanding job reservation for the Patel community.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh today spoke to Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel regarding the law and order situation in the state and assured her Centre’s support.

Additional forces have been deployed in Gujarat to control the situation.
