"Thank you for your letter dated December 4 and your offer of Rs five crore out of the Odisha Chief Minister's Relief Fund," she said in a letter to Patnaik.

The magnitude of the rain devastation was "very large" and her government was working overtime to mitigate the effects of this natural calamity, she said, adding, "I appreciate your concern and best wishes."

In a separate letter to Kumar, Jayalalithaa said she was "touched" by his concern and gesture.

She thanked him for the Rs five crore announced by him to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister's Public Relief Fund, adding the unprecedented rain and related devastation "has caused us tremendous misery."
