RAIGANJ: Five persons, including a police officer, were injured today when some BJP workers clashed with the police and pelted stones at them during a protest in North Dinajpur district over what they alleged deteriorating law and order situation.

Inspector in-charge of Raiganj Police Station Gautam Chakraborty said that about 5,000 activists of BJP blocked Raiganj-Balurghat state highway in Karnojora area.

Later, they "pelted bricks and stones at the passing vehicles", prompting the police to use canes and fire tear gas to disperse the agitators, he said.

The protesters in turn hurled bricks at the policemen injuring the IC.

BJP district unit president Subhro Roychowdhury and three party workers were also injured in the violence, Chakraborty said.
