Anti-toll Tax Campaigner Govind Pansare No More

MUMBAI:Veteran CPI leader Govind Pansare on Friday night succumbed to the gunshot wounds sustained in an attack by unidentified motorcycle-borne assailants outside his Kolhapur residence on Monday.

The Communist stalwart’s end came at Breach Candy hospital here, where he had been admitted on Friday morning after the state government had provided an air ambulance to ferry him from Adhar Hospital in Kolhapur.

According to senior Communist leader Bhalchandra Kango, Pansare vomitted blood in the evening. And his end came within hours.

Surgeons at Adhar Hospital had performed two surgeries on him to extract three bullets lodged in his body.

Pansare, 81, is survived by wife Uma. She had  also sustained injuries in the attack and is currently recuperating in Kolhapur hospital.

The police have launched a statewide manhunt for the assailants but there has been little headway. Pansare,who was at the vanguardof anti-road toll agitation, and his wife Uma were shot by unidentified persons near their house in Kolhapur on Monday when they were returning after morning walk. Police are preparing e-FITs of the suspects on the basis of information provided by Uma, who is recovering. Teams of Maharashtra ATS and Mumbai Police are assisting the Kolhapur Police in the probe.
