NEW DELHI: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Tuesday asked the ruling BJP to apply the same standards that it had used as the opposition to adjourn the Winter Session of Parliament in 2010 over the 2G scam.
“This is an issue of corruption. It had claimed of bringing to the people of this country a ‘corruption-free’ government. In fact, this has been their propaganda in the past one year. But look at all these allegations that have taken place now,” said CPI (M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury.
“The Winter Session of Parliament in 2010 was adjourned in relation to the 2G scam. There were uproars as to why A. Raja, accused in the scam, was not resigning from his position and why an investigation was not being conducted in the matter. The entire session got wasted. BJP was there in the opposition then. Similar kind of corruption is taking place now. Why is the BJP not using the same standards?” he added.
Yechury further demanded that the tainted ministers of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) should step down from their posts so that a ‘fair probe’ can be conducted to test the veracity of the allegations leveled against them.
“We want to say that on the basis of these allegations, investigation need not be conducted. But at least a fair probe should take place as to whether the allegations levelled against (them) are true or not. And while this probe takes place, the ministers against whom the allegations have been leveled must step down from their respective positions so that the probe can be conducted in a fair manner,” he said.
The Monsoon Session of Parliament is expected to be a stormy affair with the opposition set to take on the BJP-led NDA Government over the Lalit Modi row and the Vyapam scam. Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani is also expected to be in the spotlight due to a controversy over her educational qualifications.
A series of meeting were held yesterday to fine tune the strategy and ensure smooth proceedings of both the Houses.
In course of the three-week session, 24 legislative proposals have been planned to be taken up. These include eight new bills for introduction like Consumer Protection Amendment Bill, Road Transport and Safety Bill and Constitution Amendment bills relating to reservation of Women in Panchayats and Urban Local bodies.
The Lok Sabha is expected to take up the SC and ST Prevention of Atrocities Amendment Bill and Land Acquisition Bill. The Rajya Sabha will take up the Child Labour, Prevention of Corruption, Whistle Blower's Protection, Real Estate and Juvenile Justice Bill.
