Bombay HC Grants Anticipatory Bail for Javed, Setalvad

MUMBAI:The Bombay High Court on Friday granted anticipatory bail to controversial social activist Teesta Setalvad and her husband Javed Anand  for a fortnight after a CBI court here had rejected the duo’s plea in this regard.

The couple had moved for relief against likely arrest after the CBI had raided their house on July 14 in connection with the alleged violation of the foreign funding law.

And the CBI prosecutor opposed the couple’s plea on the ground that their crime was serious, requiring custodial interrogation.

The investigating agency is looking into whether Setalvad’s NGO received funds from foreign donors without the government permission.

The agency has described her as a “threat to national security”.

The Gujarat Police too have filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court saying Setalvad misused the funds she had collected to build a riot museum in Ahmedabad for personal use.

Setalvad has claimed that she is being prosecuted because she had filed cases against Prime Minister Narendra Modi in connection with the 2002 Gujarat riots, when he was the Chief Minister there.
