NEW YORK: External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj arrived in New York on Saturday for the International Yoga Day celebrations.

Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) official spokesperson Vikas Swarup tweeted to share this information.

“Namaste to the Big Apple! EAM @SushmaSwaraj arrives in JFK Airport,

for First International Day of Yoga celebrations,” he tweeted.

Swaraj will participate in the International Yoga Day event being organised by the Indian Mission at the United Nations.

The External Affairs Minister had earlier tweeted about her visit to New York. “Leaving for New York,” she tweeted.

The event will be attended by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon among others.

The United Nations declared June 21 as International Day of Yoga after adopting a measure proposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Prime Minister Modi had in his speech at the UN General Assembly in September last year called for recognition of such a day.
