Cops to Reconstruct Sheena Face Using Skull

MUMBAI: Taking forward the investigation into Sheena Bora murder case, the Mumbai Police are likely to employ face recognition technique on the skull recovered from Pen in Raigad district.

A source said the police have decided to conduct a facial reconstruction on the skull, wherein experts give identity to it using skeletal remains, bones and teeth.

The state-run J J Group of Hospitals have handed over some bones and a tooth from a body, supposed to be of Sheena, to the police.

The police have also taken samples of blood and hair of Sheena’s mother Indrani Mukerjea and brother Mikhail Bora to test whether they match with the skull’s DNA.

A police expert said a body’s parentage and siblinghood could be established based on the DNA samples, using two dimensional techniques. Face is reconstructed jointly by an artist and a forensic anthropologist. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation-run KEM Hospital has a facility for the same.

Experts say that effects of extreme negative parenting may have crept deeper into Indrani’s personality, turning her cold-hearted.

Sheena in the US: Indrani

The prime accused in Sheena murder case, Indrani Mukerjea has reiterated her claim that Sheena is living in the US.

Interestingly, Indrani’s former husband and a co-accused Sanjeev Khanna has admitted during the police interrogation that he was involved in Sheena’s murder. He reportedly told police that he held Sheena’s hands and legs, while Indrani strangulated her in a running car.

However, Khanna’s lawyer Shreyans Mithare has denied that his client confessed to any crime. “Confession can’t be recorded in police custody. It is not admissible in the court,” he said.

3 Cops Questioned

Raigad SP Suvez Haq on Tuesday questioned three officers attached with the Pen Police Station, under whose jurisdiction the crime allegedly took place, to find out whether there was any cover-up in the case. The police had not registered a case after discovering the body on May 23, 2012. The question of why the police did so is yet unanswered.

Lens on Khanna Property

The city police would also check how Sanjeev Khanna suddenly became so rich that he invested a handsome amount in a restaurant in Kolkata in late 2012, a couple of months after Sheena was allegedly killed.

A team of city police has reached Kolkata to investigate into Khanna’s investments.

GIVING A FACE

After serial blasts rocked Mumbai’s suburban trains on July 11, 2006, the city police used face recognition technique to identify the only unclaimed body. The body was identified as that of Salim, one of the Pakistani terrorists who had planted bombs in trains. The terrorist was unable to get off the crowded train at Matunga Road and fell prey to his own act.
