NEW DELHI: A Delhi couple has been arrested in a child trafficking case, police said on Monday. The couple claimed they were childless and badly wanted a child.

Kamlesh Kumar Gupta, 28, and his wife, whose name was not revealed by police, were arrested on Sunday in central Delhi's Connaught Place area.

Police said the couple had recently kidnapped a two-and-half-year-old child from south Delhi's Vasant Kunj on September 20.

"The child was rescued safely from the possession of the couple," Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Ravindra Yadav said.

Yadav said the couple, hailing from Bihar, had taken a room on rent near the house of the child's parents in May.

"They first gained the confidence of the child's parents and later kidnapped him," the official said.

In their interrogation, the couple told police that they were childless and wanted a child.

The couple also told police that they had picked up a baby boy aged about six-eight months ago from a park in Gurgaon in 2012.

"The baby fell ill after two-three months and died. Since then they were searching for another child," said the official.
