BJP Leader Arrested in Jhargram

BJP Sukhendu Patro and four of his followers were arrested today for allegedly pinning down TMC woman activist Chandana.

JHARGAM: A district level BJP leader was arrested today along with four others for allegedly beating up a woman Trinamool Congress activist and attacking two policemen at Kalmapukuria in Jhargram of West Midnapore district.

SP Sukhendu Hira said the Jhargram unit Secretary of BJP Sukhendu Patro and four of his followers were arrested today for allegedly pinning down TMC woman activist Chandana Paik to ground following an argument and then attacking two police personnel when they rushed to the site to intervene.

A police vehicle was also ransacked in the attack, which took place last evening, the SP added.

Elections in the first phase took place in Jhargram area yesterday apart from many other parts of junglemahal in West Midnapore and the incident happened after voting was over.

The five were charged with beating up a woman and attacking public servant on duty and damaging government property, the officer said.

BJP district President Sukhomoy Satpathi said the arrests was a conspiracy and threatened a movement if the five were not released soon and the charges dropped against them.

Chandana was now under treatment at a local hospital, her party said.
