CHENNAI: Two members of 'Makkal Mandram', a Kancheepuram-based commune working for the welfare of Dalits and Tribals, were attacked and an attempt was made on their life, allegedly by PMK functionaries, on the Kancheepuram -Vandavasi highway on Monday night.

The attack was reportedly fall out of the commune sheltering an inter-caste couple.

The two, Balu Ambedkar and Thanjai Thamizhan, were returning in a two-wheeler when they were intercepted and attacked. “Two persons flagged our bike and asked us for fuel. Soon, four others joined and we fled the scene as the gang chased us with weapons," Balu told Express. He claimed that the gang was sent by local PMK functionaries as their commune had provided shelter to an inter-caste couple from Vellore district who got married in February this year. "The gang members kept on saying that we should send the girl (from the Vanniyar community) back to her family," Balu said.
