Panchayat in UP Allows Rapist to Walk Free After Touching Victim's Feet

A panchayat in Bareilly allowed a rapist to walk free without facing any legal action after making him to touch the feet of the victim.

It must be noted that it was the police who referred the case to the panchayat. The incident took place on January 28, where a 30-year-old widow working in a MNREGA project in Meergunj forest region was dragged down to an isolated spot and raped by one of her supervisors.

Rohtash, the accused reportedly threatened to kill her if she reported the crime. Disregarding the threat, the victim went to Meergunj police station to file the complaint. The officials refused to accept her complaint and referred the matter to the village pradhan.
