No Permission From MEA, Pakistan Envoy Cancels Chennai Trip

He was also planning to meet with media, business organisations and faculty of Madras University.

NEW DELHI: Pakistan High Commissioner Abdul Basit has cancelled his trip to Chennai, as the Ministry of External Affairs has not given him clearance, Pakistani sources said on Saturday.

Basit was scheduled to go on an official visit to Chennai from February 21-23, during which he had appointments with Tamil Nadu Governor K Rosaiah and Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.

He was also planning to meet with media, business organisations and faculty of Madras University.

The Pakistan High Commission had applied for permission for the envoy as well as a delegation of embassy officials.

“We do not know whether permission/clearances will come through or not, therefore the High Commissioner has called off the visit. As this is the high commissioner’s first visit to Chennai, he would not like to leave New Delhi amidst uncertainty,” said a source from the Pakistani Embassy.
