Killing of Congolese not racial: Swaraj

NEW DELHI: Laying out India’s efforts to provide security to African nationals, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Tuesday announced a slew of measures to be undertaken, including a country-wide sensitisation campaign, as she asserted that the killing of a Congolese youth was not a “racial crime”.

Terming the killing of Masonda Ketada Olivier as “barbaric”, Swaraj said, “Indian government is committed to a fast-track trial in the killing” and “harshest possible punishment” for the culprits.

The African delegation, comprising Ambassador of Eritrea, who is the Dean of the African Diplomatic Corps, Acting High Commissioner of Nigeria, who is Chair of the African Union’s Student Committee, and Head of the Association of African Students in India, that met with Swaraj raised concerns over safety.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday three more persons were arrested in connection with cases of assault on African nationals last week.
