BJP playing divide and rule policy to capture power in UP: Congress

NEW DELHI: With BJP set to make the Kairana "migration" of Hindus a major issue, Congress today accused it of playing the politics of "divide and rule" like the British to capture power in Uttar Pradesh in Assembly polls next year.

Party general secretary Ghulam Nabi Azad, while talking to reporters, expressed concern over BJP chief Amit Shah himself making Kairana a major issue at the just-concluded National Executive meeting of his party.

Azad said the need of Congress for Uttar Pradesh and the country was all the more today when the ruling party at the Centre, instead of dousing communal fires was attempting to polarise people for electoral gains.

While Shah has made it clear that Kairana cannot be taken "lightly", BJP has said it will send a fact-finding team this week there, which is not far from Muzaffarnagar, the epicentre of deadly riots that killed over 60 people in 2013.
