JAMMU: Anthropogenic factors were responsible for the September 2014 floods in Kashmir, Vice Chancellor of Central University of Jammu, Ashok Aima said today.

"Massive illegal constructions in Srinagar in the last 27 years have choked the small channels which could have otherwise prevented the flood of this magnitude," he said after inaugurating a two-day workshop on Floods and Rains in Jammu and Kashmir in 2014, jointly organised by Kashmir University and University of Jammu.

Asserting that the civil society is depending only on state institutions for preservation of the wetlands in Kashmir, he said there is need to develop a multi-tier response and strengthen social structure for promoting the environment health in the Valley.

Emeritus Professor of School of Environmental Science and convener of the workshop V Rajamani said the aim is to deepen our understanding of the causes of extreme climatic events and educate people about climate change.
