NEW DELHI: CPI congratulated employees and workers for observing the "most successful" general strike on the call of Central Trade Unions (CTUs) today and called the protest as a "rebuff" on "anti-worker" policies of the NDA Government at Centre.
"The Central Secretariat of CPI congratulates the working class and employees for the most successful general strike all over India on the call of Central Trade Unions," the party said in a statement.
The CPI claimed there was a "bandh like" situation in many states as employees attached to banks, insurance companies, financial institutions, telecommunication, coal, steel, mining sectors, state and central government went on strike even as many state transporters also joined the strike.
"The participation is likely to be more than last strikes of workers. Last year, 15 crore workers participated in strike. Unrest in the working class, the creators of the wealth of the nation, is not good for the progress of the nation," it noted.
The party also urged the government to start discussion with the CTUs and solve their "justified" demands as early as possible.
