NEW DELHI: The Gurmehar Kaur issue doesn’t seem to subside. It has snowballed into a political tussle between the ruling BJP and other parties. Even as she announced her intention of quitting the social media campaign, leaders of Left parties gathered on DU campus to support her. “I’m withdrawing from the campaign. Congratulations everyone. I request to be left alone. I said what I had to say... One thing is for sure, next time we will think twice before resorting to violence or threats and that’s all this was about,” she tweeted.
Gurmehar on Tuesday withdrew her campaign against the ABVP after allegedly receiving threats from members of the RSS-backed outfit. The daughter of martyr Captain Mandeep Singh received support from her college — the Lady Shri Ram College — which termed her act as sensible and brave. Union minister Kiren Rijiju on Tuesday clarified that his remark on who was “polluting” the mind of an army martyr’s daughter was aimed at “the Leftists” and noted that she was free to express her views.
The police registered a case of sexual harassment and criminal intimidation against unknown persons in connection with the “rape threats”. It is learned that after all the trolls and criticism, Gurmehar has reportedly slipped out of Delhi. Two alleged ABVP activists were arrested for attacking two AISA supporters.
