MUMBAI: The Bombay High Court on Tuesday directed the State government to file an affidavit to clear its stand on handing over additional data to the Maharashtra State Commission for Backward Classes, supporting claims that the community is socially and educationally backward.
The commission was not constituted till the government submitted before the court on January 4, 2017, supportive data claiming that the Maratha community is socially and educationally backward.
The State government had already stated in court that the data can be transferred to the commission, but was asked to further clarify its stand by filing an affidavit. The affidavit will be filed by May 4 after which the order would be given, the court said.
After the commission was reconstituted recently, two petitions were filed in the court urging that the data be transferred to them.
Petitioners have suggested that the data be referred to the Maharashtra State Commission for Backward Classes saying it would not be feasible for the high court to analyse all the data.
However, anti-Maratha reservation activists have opposed this move.
