LUCKNOW: All five BJP nominees, including CM Yogi Adityanath and deputy CMs Keshav Maurya and Dinesh Sharma, are set to get elected unopposed to the UP Council as no candidate from the Opposition filed the papers on the last day of nominations on Tuesday. These seats were vacated by four SP and a BSP MLC, who later joined the BJP.

As the nominations were filed separately for five seats which have different tenures, Yogi and Maurya filed the nomination for seats vacated by Samajwadi Party legislators Yashwant Singh and Bukkal Nawab whose tenure had to end on July 6, 2022. This way, Yogi and Maurya will remain members of the upper house till next UP assembly elections in 2022.

The tenure of other MLCs, however, would be shorter. Deputy CM Dinesh Sharma and transport minister Swatantra Deo Singh filed the nominations for the seats vacated by SP's Ashok Bajpai and Sarojini Agarwal whose tenure was to end on January 30, 2021. Waqf minister Mohsin Raza will get the shortest tenure - just nine months - as he filed the nomination for the seat vacated by BSP's Jaiveer Singh, whose tenure was to end on May 5, 2018.
