LUCKNOW: The state government is contemplating to bring an order against closing schools on the birth and death anniversaries of social leaders, said Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday.

Instead, the government suggests organising special programmes in schools to educate children about the greatness of the leaders. There are 37 gazetted and 18 restricted such holidays in UP as per its official list. The CM was speaking at the 126th birth anniversary of Baba Sahab Bhim Rao Ambedkar here.

Announcing that a proposal in this regard is being prepared by the department concerned, CM Yogi said that it was not a great idea to close schools on such occasion as many times, children even did not know why they had been given a holiday. “This defeats the purpose of holiday which leaves schoolchildren unaware of the importance of the day,” he said.

The CM added that the programmes on the life and times of such accomplished personalities should be prepared and organised so that schoolchildren could take inspiration from their contributions to the society.

Citing Dr Ambedkar’s example, he said: “The struggle, journey and contributions of Baba Sahab is a saga which has inspired many generations and will continue to do the same in future as well.” He said that a holiday on every occasion, especially social, made no sense. “In the wake of so many holidays, the teachers are left with just 130-140 teaching days which are not adequate,” he said.

As per sources, 55 government holidays along with 52 Sundays, summer and winter vacations and examinations leave the schools with 120-odd teaching days. “In such a scenario, teachers rush with syllabus without seeing if the students are learning or not,” he said.
