AICTE to consult states for NEET like centralised exams for admissions to engineering colleges

These proposals are expected to be taken up at the next meeting of the AICTE when the consultation process would be over, an official pointed out.

NEW DELHI: The government is expected to take a decision on holding of a National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET ) like single entrance examination for admission to engineering colleges after holding consultation with different states, it was decided at a high-level meeting of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) here on Wednesday.

Impressed by the NEET, which would conduct a single examination for admissions to medical colleges, there has been widespread support from many participants for a similar pattern of examinations for engineering as well, an official said adding the matter would be discussed with various states as well.

Additionally, the central government believes that holding a single entrance examination for engineering colleges across the country would not only help in curbing irregularities and bring transparency but also reduce the burden on students of having to appear in several examinations.

It is also learnt that one of the representatives of a state government who was present at the meeting also expressed some reservations to the idea. Another key proposal which was discussed at the meeting on Wednesday pertained to making an exit test mandatory for students, who are passing out of college to assess their skill sets.

These proposals are expected to be taken up at the next meeting of the AICTE when the consultation process would be over, an official pointed out.
