NEW DELHI: As many as 777 police personnel will be honoured with police medals on the occasion of the Republic Day this year including Police Medals for Gallantry (PMG) to 100 uniformed personnel, President’s Police Medals for Distinguished Service to 80 personnel and Police Medal for Meritorious Service to 597 personnel.
Insurgency-hit Jammu and Kashmir leads the tally of Police Medal for Gallantry (PMG) medals to be announced on the eve of Republic Day this year with the State bagging 32 out of the 100 awardees selected for the coveted honours from the police and paramilitary forces.
Besides the PMGs, the Centre will also honour 80 police personnel with President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service (PPMDS) and 597 President’s Police Medal for Meritorious Service (PPMMS) to the police personnel from the States those from the Central paramilitary and Central police organisations.
Out of the 100 PMGs, 10 have been awarded posthumously and the Central paramilitary forces have bagged 22 medals and the remaining 78 have been accorded to the State police forces. Only one IPS officer Sunil Kumar (Assam cadre) has been selected for the medal this year and the remaining are from the constabulary or cadre officers from the paramilitary forces.
Among the Central paramilitary forces, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) bagged the maximum PMGs with 15 medals including one posthumously followed by five to Border Security Force (BSF) and one to Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB).
As many as 12 police personnel from Andhra Pradesh, followed by nine from Jharkhand, seven each from Chhattisgarh and Uttar Pradesh and four each for Assam and Manipur and three from Delhi have also been selected for the PMGs.
