Undertrial injured in attack by inmates in Ludhiana jail

LUDHIANA: An undertrial was injured after he was allegedly attacked by some inmates at the Ludhiana central jail, police said today.

Jagjit Singh, lodged in the jail in connection with the Balachaur sacrilege incident, was allegedly attacked by five prisoners, including two gangsters, who barged into his barrack last night, they said.

He was beaten up by an iron pipe by the inmates, police said, adding that Singh's leg was broken and he also received several injuries.

Singh was admitted to a local civil hospital under security cover where his treatment was underway.

His condition was stated to be stable.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Dharm Pal said after receiving the information about the incident, a team of Ludhiana police went to the central jail for investigation.

However, the police have not received any complaint from the jail authorities and thus, no case has been registered so far, Pal said.
