Missing Uttar Pradesh woman returns home after 25 years

SERVIALASORE: The family members of Gitarani Das in Uttar Pradesh's Gazipur village celebrated her homecoming. Gitarani, who went missing 25 years ago was found by the members of a Kerala-based NGO who rescued her and helped her reunite with her family.

Gitarani used to work as a domestic help in Cuttack, Odisha where she married a youth and the couple had a son. Six months after her wedding, she went to her parent's house along with her son and left him under the care of her mother and brother. Gitarani reportedly went missing while she was on her way back to Cuttack.

Despite continued efforts, her family members couldn't find her for years. Eventually, they were forced to believe that Gitarani was no more. Her son Chandan is now 26 years old and is married.

It was learnt that Gitarani was mentally unstable when she went missing and she somehow reached Kerala. There, she worked as a domestic help in several houses before she was rescued by the NGO and admitted to a shelter home.

After she recovered from her mental ailment, Gitarani was able to recall her past. The NGO then got in touch with her family and helped in the reunion.

At home, Gitarani was able to recognise her mother and brother. Spending several years at Kerala she had forgotten Odia language and was able to only speak in Hindi and Malayalam.

Surprisingly, Gita now wants to go back to Kerala as she has found it difficult to get accustomed with her family surrounding.
