Two killed, 26 injured as bus falls off bridge in Odisha

BHAWANIPATNA: At least two persons were killed and 26 others injured in a road accident on the outskirt of Bhawanipatna in Odisha's Kalahandi district on Friday.

The deceased have been identified as Kalpataru Panda (45) of Kuakhia and Niharika Sahu (2), daughter of Maguni Sahu of Jarka in Jajpur district.

The mishap occurred when Sinapalai bound private bus Manikeswari fell from a bridge on the outskirt of Bhawanipatna town after the driver lost control while allowing another vehicle to overtake.

“The bus fell from a height of 30 feet. The injured persons, including the driver and helper of the ill fate bus, were rescued by locals, fire fighting team and police personnel. They were rushed to the District Headquarters Hospital here,” said a police official.

While three among the injured persons were shifted to Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) at Sambalpur and two shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital at Cuttack
after their condition deteriorated.

A case has been registered and further police investigation is on.
