CBI has now become so-called BJP Bureau of Investigation: Mamata Banerjee

The central government today asked CBI Director Alok Verma to go on leave as his rift with Special Director Rakesh Asthana escalated over bribery allegations.

KOLKATA: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday attacking the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led Central government said the central investigation agency CBI was not CBI anymore, but the "so-called BBI" -- "BJP Bureau of Investigation".

"CBI has now become so called BBI (BJP Bureau of Investigation ) - very unfortunate!," Ms Banerjee tweeted.

In an unprecedented fallout of the recent happenings within the Central Bureau for Investigation, the central government today asked CBI Director Alok Verma to go on leave as his rift with Special Director Rakesh Asthana escalated over bribery allegations.

M Nageshwar Rao, a senior Joint Director with the probe agency, has been given the interim charge as CBI director.

Rao was appointed interim CBI chief early this morning, according to an order by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.
