NEW DELHI: Congress President Rahul Gandhi remains adamant on stepping down as the party President despite growing demands that he must continue in the post, General Secretary KC Venugopal said on Thursday.

"We are still trying to convince him. Party workers from across the country want him to continue as the party chief," Venugopal told the media.

At the same time, Gandhi has said that he will chair crucial meetings until a new party chief was found, Venugopal said. "There is a meeting today (Thursday) and he shall chair that too."

Gandhi announced his decision to quit as Congress President after the party suffered a major blow in the Lok Sabha elections, winning just 52 seats. Gandhi himself was defeated in Amethi in Uttar Pradesh although he was elected to the Lok Sabha from Wayanad in Kerala.

Congress is known for jingoism to promote the first family. If congress did not perform well in 1996 general elections P V Narasimha rao was stripped of the leader of the parliamentary party and later the party president by the camp followers of 10 Janpath. when the party suffered reverses in 1998 Sitraam Kesri was chucked out of the party office unceremoniously in a mid day coup engineered by the family and executed by Pranab Mukerjee through a cwc resolution. when sonia performed badly in the general elections held one year later there was not even a murmur. the same is the case in 2014 and 2019. now rahul is enacting a drama so that a pliable person to the family is elected (nominated) to the post. He will keep the seat warm for a year or two when public memory of general election 2019 fades away. the president will give way for Yuvaraj Rahul to take over. The family is the greatest liability for the party.
