Centre worried about rising Covid numbers in six states

India's total COVID-19 active caseload has reached 1,97,237  and now comprises 1.74 per cent of India's total infections.

NEW DELHI:  Six states  Maharashtra, Kerala, Punjab, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat — continue to report a surge in Covid-19 cases. Together, they account for 85.6 per cent of the new cases reported in a day India, the Centre said on Friday.

On Thursday, 23,285 new cases were registered across India, with 117 deaths. According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Maharashtra reported the highest daily new cases at 14,317, which is 61.48 per cent of the daily new cases reported in the country. It was followed by Kerala with 2,133 and Punjab with 1,305.

Eight states Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Delhi, Gujarat, Karnataka and Haryana have been witnessing an upward trajectory in daily new cases and the active caseload now stands at 1.74 per cent of India’s total positive cases.

As on Friday, five states cumulatively accounted for 82.96 per cent of the total active cases in the country. Maharashtra and Kerala account for 71.69 per cent of the country’s total active cases. Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Punjab, Kerala and Maharashtra have 83 per cent of total active cases in the country.

On Thursday, in a press briefing, senior officials of the Centre expressed deep worry over the second wave of infections in some parts of the country including Maharashtra, where cases have been rising.

Preparatory leave in all Punjab schools
Chandigarh: Keeping in view the surge in Covid-19 numbers, Punjab government has declared preparatory leaves for all classes in government, government-aided and private schools. Teachers will be present in schools. Students, who want guidance from teachers regarding exams can go to schools.
