NEW DELHI:   The Common University Entrance Test-Undergraduate (CUET-UG) has been cancelled and deferred in Jammu and Kashmir and Manipur, the UGC and NTA announced Friday. The exams in Jammu and Kashmir will be held from May 26, announced University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Prof M. Jagadesh Kumar. The step was taken following demands by the students that they have to travel to another state to take the exam.

Earlier, the NTA had announced that exams in Manipur have been deferred to May 29 in view of the law and order situation In a tweet, the UGC Chairman said, “Being sensitive to the needs of candidates and to facilitate the students of Jammu and Kashmir, the NTA is exploring the possibility of creating temporary centres in Jammu and Kashmir. In view of the above, it has been decided that the CUET (UG) 2023 examination will now be conducted from 26 May onwards in the Union Territory.”

It has been decided that the CUET (UG)-2023 examination scheduled for May 21 to 25 May is cancelled in the UT.  When asked for the reason, the UGC chief told this paper that the step was taken following requests from the students. “Many of them were given centres outside J&K due to the non-availability of centres. NTA is now working to find additional centres with the help of government administration,” the UGC chairman said, adding that they are trying all possibilities to help students.

He said that there has been a “phenomenal increase” in the number of students – 87,309 unique candidates – from Jammu and Kashmir. The state students association had earlier asked the Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and the Jammu and Kashmir Lt Governor Manoj Sinha to intervene in the matter so that students from the state don’t have to travel to different parts of the country to take the exam.

The second edition of the undergraduate entrance exam is set to begin in the country on May 21. Though it was earlier scheduled to end on May 31, the NTA decided to extend the exam schedule by at least four days to accommodate the higher number of candidates in certain cities.
