BARIPADA: A 22-year-old woman has been ostracised for pursuing higher education after marriage in Mayurbhanj district. The incident took place in Krushna Chandra Pur (KC Pur) village under Betnoti police limits of Mayurbhanj district.
The woman, Subasini Singh, on Friday registered a police complaint at Betnoti police station against her husband Kamalakanta Singh besides, Ward Member and Sarpanch of the village. After passing matriculation, Subasini got married to Kamalakanta and the couple has a four-year-old daughter. Two years back, she expressed her interest in pursuing a diploma course which did not go down well with her in-laws. Apparently, Kamalakanta is not even a matriculate and his parents wanted Subasini to work at home and their farm land. She, however, enrolled herself in a diploma course in civil engineering at a college in Chitroda village nearby. Despite being mentally and physically tortured by her in-laws and husband, Subasini continued her education and went to the college daily.
Kamalakanta and his parents placed the matter before the village committee 15 days back and on Tuesday, a kangaroo court was held where the village heads, including Sarpanch and Ward Member, asked Subasini to stop studying further and do household chores. When she refused, they ostracised her from the village. Subsequently, she shifted to her parents’ house at Dantiamuha village.
The woman decided to inform police and on Friday, she tried to reach KC Pur police outpost. Receiving information, her husband, in-laws and villagers of KC Pur reached her house and threatened her of dire consequences if she informed police about the incident. With the help of some local mediapersons, Subasini managed to reach Betnoti police station where she registered a complaint against Kamalakanta, Ward Member Mina Singh and Sarpanch Gopal Singh. The three, however, refuted the allegation.
IIC Minati Biswal said a case has been registered and action will be taken against the three accused. No one has been arrested till reports last came in.
